about

Celebrating 10 Years of No One Listening to Apostrophe S

credits

released May 22, 2014

Track notes:

1. Featuring Macintosh Alex
2. After I finally left my parent's house, my friend Corey let me live in his small house that he shared with his buddy, Dan. I mostly slept in the small room occupied by the love of my life, Mark Evans, and all his dope equipment. I miss that reel-to-reel 1/4-in tape player. He and I made a nice EP together as the Troof, called Space Pillow. That was a fun summer. Sometimes I got time alone and had access to Mark's stuff and a short stack of records, and I made this beat by accidentally dropping the needle on random spots on a Van Morrison LP. There were honestly very few edits to make it sound like it does now. Mark showed me how to make a fat 808 bd sound. Thank you, Mark.
3. I mean, I really don't remember making this.
4. Dunebuggy was one of my favorite beats from the batch I churned out after putting out my first album (Apartment). This is when I think my sound really started to cohere correctly. Other tracks from this time include "Warped," which my good buddy André turned into a banger by rapping over it (released as "Gotta Get"), "Putty," which appears on my album Pylon, and everybody's favorite, "KEEZ." This version was lost for years. The only difference between this and the version I took with me through the years is the slightly-out-of-sync arpeggio going on up top. But I like this one a lot more. Blessings and good fortune to Zack Auron for hanging onto a lot of these beats while I shifted through many computers and wiped many HDDs.
5. I don't know why, but my real real good friend Hoff loves this beat soooooooooo much. He says it's up there with his favorite Dilla, Madlib, and DOOM beats. That is such a cool compliment. Esposito, you can definitely have this beat to rap on - whatever beautiful nonsense you can think of, do it.
6. Blake wanted this for his mixtape he never put out. This is a lil demo I made after putting out Pylon. I like it. I forget the sample.
7. Originally called "Hitting My Stride," I just can't help but think of MF DOOM laying some serious wisdom on this every time I hear it.
8. A short one from the collection Zack saved.
9. I cannot believe that - to my knowledge - no one has sampled "Autopsy" by Fairport Convention. Someone do a better job than I did, please.
10. This is more recent and I like it.
11. Also more recent.
12. This is actually one of many demo tracks from the soundtrack for "Vocabulary of the Mysteries" that didn't make the cut, but it's the only one that should ever be heard.
13. I think that's Phoebe Snow saying "no," but I don't remember.
14. Also also more recent.
15. I think that whole sample is just me singing. Cool.
