about

this is a tape full of goofs and beeps and incongruities. explore whether or not you would question the intentionality of my musical decisions if I am not selling bazillions of units. the unedited language of strangers expressing beautiful things.
unless I have a big stage my artistic decisions mean nothing and that is why we must separate consumption from creation & cash from composition.
I am the subject you are the subject // art is the moment when life disappears

credits

released July 9, 2014

1. By It's Very Nature - youtube sampled, a complex idea voiced in simple & earnest language by a young guy making a video diary who had some kind of medical breathing apparatus hooked up to his nose.

2. Linked Up - everybody like, "what's that African-sounding one?" and every body like it. André (again) has an unreleased track using this beat. Previously appeared on the "Trax from the Crypt Vol. 1" comp.

3. My One Desire - a whiteboy's trapped-out comment on whether or not sampling a corny/nostalgic pop song has any artistic merit (the fact that it is a comment inherently lends it artistic merit)

4. Doing What You're Telled - youtube sample of a 2nd grader from the Southern U.S. expressing her views on the importance of art education.

5. Vitamin B Complex - Phoebe Snow, oh, ohh, "2-fisted love" from forever ago

6. Back It Up - there was a time when I really tried to sound like Rustie but couldn't

7. Wacky Chan - title inspired by a joke regarding "the Protector," wherein a Jackie Chan impersonator runs into Tony Ja at the airport.

8. Every Morning - aka "warped Carole King gives advice"

9. Sad People - I just really wanted to use a sample that would do the exact opposite of "hype the crowd up." Beat's pretty good, too. Punk rock.

10. Entropy - more words on chaos and decay in the era of amnesia and impermanence.

11. Passing Glance - I imagine the way people skip over tracks and browse around looking for something instantly captivating as a sort of "passing glance," like trying not to make it seem like you were just looking at a stranger on the sidewalk.

12. (No Words) - a question of the inability to express one's melting identity.

13. Sugarcube - an older track of mine raised from the grave. the structure of a song. could have been mixed better, but I like it. I don't understand why I used to put soft delays and panning effects on bass drums, though. that took some fixing.

14. I Am Not Here - a captive anime cyborg speaks to a boy playing a text-adventure game. all youtube samples.

15. Slug U 2 Sleep - this track was originally titled "YOLO" but that's because I made it over 2 years ago and it was slightly more relevant and less annoying for something to refer to yolo at that point in time. but then again, yolo.

I would like to thank Corey the Tall Guy, Ushkow the Squinty One, Bill the Halloween Jesus, Mark the Heavy Metal D&B DJ, Jake the Auteurd2 , Espo the Screenplay Himself, Luke the Han Solo, Abbie the Adventurer, Marlee the Curator, Dan the Bassist, Martin the Editor, Hoff the Trumpet Master, Laura & Edgar the Best Roommates and Loves, Mic & Dana at the Machine, the thrift store that sold me 2 pairs of functional speakers for 20 dollars, Dan the Drummer, Ron the Coffee Nerd, Kevin the Old Friend, Kaitlyn the Other Old Friend, Jim the Don, Wilcox the Destroyer, this guy Preston who told me he liked this tape the other day, Norah+Kitty+KColl+Gordo+Drew+Pat+other people who watched me goof hard at the Wine Bar the other night, and all the secret people I reached out to so I can get some features on the upcoming album!

stuff that's good: Patife Band, "Absolutely Free," Mark the Beast, Spooky Black, DonChristian, FKA Twigs, Rhythm Heritage, Bob James, "Like Water for Chocolate," Steve Tibbetts, Larry Coryell, BLKrKRT, Picasso Allen Poe, YC the Cynic, Snakefoot, Secos & Molhados, Roger Kellaway Cello Quartet, Meaner Pencil, CCR, Dailon, Mahler, Galt MacDermot, Madlib

and going to a Titus Andronicus show and still dancing and enjoying myself because music is music and not a series of cliques.
